One of the first paintings I ever made, you can see it in the rawness, the uneven brushstrokes, the non-existent technique. I had just bought my first set of paints, the world had gone still in lockdown, and it was just me, this face, and a new craft that was handling me more than I was handling it.

That look haunted me. When I hung it on my little shrine, the eyes followed me across the room, watchful, almost alive. There’s nothing quite like a painting staring back at you, as if it knows something you don’t. That feeling hooked me.

Thanks to Joaquin, I learned to paint. This was my first attempt at honoring him - raw, imperfect, but honest. Years later, life came full circle when he saw my paintings and hugged me.

Suddenly, I’d forgotten even my name, let alone all the imperfect brushstrokes. Totally worth it!
